How the gravel calculator works

The calculator converts length, width and compacted depth into cubic yards, then adds a compaction allowance for loose material. Tons are estimated by multiplying loose cubic yards by material density.

What density should I use?

Many aggregates fall around 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, but the exact number depends on stone type and moisture.

Why compaction allowance?

Loose aggregate settles during placement and compaction. The allowance helps avoid coming up short after rolling or tamping.
